Passing a knowledge exam tells the regulator you know the rules. It doesn't tell anyone you can fly a fifty-pound spray drone over a working farm at dusk, recover from a lost-link event on an inspection site, or talk a client through a mapping mission while a storm cell builds on the horizon. That gap — between knowing the regulations and operating inside them — is exactly what the Vantage Drone School is built to close.

Training MethodologyHow We Train: The Competency Framework

Every program, no matter the level, runs through the same two-stage framework. It's designed so that by the time a pilot is handling a high-value airframe on a live job, they can effectively do it.

Knowledge Phase

Self-paced eLearning and live theory webinars focused on regulations, weather, standard operating procedures, and mission planning.

Live Field Sorties

Supervised stick-time on real mission sites — mapping, spraying, or inspection work — under the eye of an instructor who flies the same missions professionally.

The instructors teaching the course are the same pilots flying the live spray, mapping, livestock, and remediation missions the day after. The SOP in the classroom is the SOP in the field.

Mandatory RequirementThe Flight Review: Where Knowledge Meets the Controller

Earning the Transport Canada Pilot Certificate for Advanced RPAS Operations isn't a single test — it's a path with two mandatory milestones: the Advanced Exam and the flight review. Passing the exam proves a pilot knows the regulations on paper. The flight review proves they can fly to that standard in the air, in front of a Transport Canada–approved reviewer, under real operating conditions. Neither one substitutes for the other, and the order matters: the exam has to come first.

Here's what the full path looks like, step by step:

Step 1

Complete Foundational Knowledge Training

Before attempting the Advanced Exam, pilots build the regulatory and theoretical base — airspace rules, weather, site survey principles, and standard operating procedures — through structured eLearning and live theory sessions.

Step 2

Sit and Pass the Advanced Exam

This is Transport Canada's written knowledge test for Advanced RPAS Operations. It has to be passed before a flight review can even be booked — it's the gatekeeper for everything that follows.

Step 3

Book a Flight Review With an Approved Reviewer

Once the exam is passed, the pilot books a flight review with a Transport Canada–approved flight reviewer. This cannot be self-administered or conducted by just any instructor — the reviewer must hold the specific Transport Canada approval for this role.

Step 4

Ground & Flight Evaluation

The review starts on the ground with a proper site survey and pre-flight planning process — assessing airspace, obstacles, weather, and mission risk per Appendix A of TP 15263. In the air, the pilot then demonstrates core handling skills: controlled manoeuvring, accurate positioning, and the stick precision that separates a competent operator from someone who can simply keep an aircraft airborne.

Step 5

Procedures, Regulations & Results

The reviewer evaluates how the pilot handles routine mission steps alongside emergency scenarios — lost link, fly-aways, low battery — and how correctly regulations are applied in the moment, not just recited. Once the review is complete, results are submitted and the Transport Canada Pilot Certificate for Advanced RPAS Operations is issued.

Step 6

Maintain Recency Every 24 Months

To keep advanced privileges valid, certificate holders must complete a new flight review every 24 months. Recency isn't optional — it's what keeps the certificate active.

Beyond VLOSComplex Operations and the Road to BVLOS

Once the fundamentals and the flight review are behind a pilot, the enterprise-level tracks pick up where the basics leave off. Advanced Training builds fleet-management and team-leadership skill for operators running multiple aircraft and crews. Complex Level 1 Training goes further still, into the conditions that define genuinely complex and BVLOS-adjacent work: dense urban airspace, low-light and night operations, and managing signal interference when a mission doesn't go to plan.

None of it is taught in isolation from the software stack, either. Mastery of DJI Terra, mapping and photogrammetry, and mission-planning tools runs alongside the flying, because a modern complex mission lives as much in the data as it does in the air.
